INTRODUCING THE ARTIST:
Evelyn Garvey studied at the Philadelphia Conservatory with Olga Samaroff and was a theory student of Vincent Persichetti. She holds degrees from Temple University and the Eastman School of Music and has studied piano with Bristow Hardin, Arthur Hice, Cecile Genhart and William Masselos. Since 1977, when she was invited to give a recital at the Smithsonian Institute on their restored Duiken fortepiano, she has become interested in the performance of music of the classical period on the piano as it existed in those days. After a meeting with Evelyn Garvey, Paul Badura-Skoda, the eminent pianist and authority on the music of this period, commented:

“…Evelyn Garvey, the versatile pianist, has turned recently to fortepianos. With delicate phrasing and fine artistry, she played to me Mozart on her Walter replica made by Philip Belt. It was a delightful experience…”

And the fortepianist Malcolm Bilson said this about Mrs. Garvey:

“…There are very few harpsichordists or modern pianists who adapt readily to the Viennese fortepiano. Evelyn Garvey has taken to the fortepiano as though that were the most natural instrument for her. Her interpretations go directly to the music through the instrument as she plays…”

Following her concert at the Smithsonian, James Weaver, Director of Chamber Music Programs wrote:

“Evelyn Garvey’s performance on the Smithsonian’s eighteenth- century fortepiano had style and brilliance. She mastered the technical nuances available on the instrument, offering wonderful insight to the works on her program…”

CRITICAL ACCLAIM
C. P. E. Bach’s highly charged, idiomatic style is most fully revealed in his keyboard fantasias: written-down improvisations ranging from 15 seconds to seven minutes in length, and reveling in a wayward, unpredictable freedom of personal expression. Indeed, the composer himself dubbed his last work in this genre “C. P. E. Bach’s Innermost Feelings”. Much is left to the intelligence and discretion of the performer, and the challenge is splendidly met by Evelyn Garvey. Using a modern reconstruction of Mozart’s 1786 Walther fortepiano, she gives fullblooded readings of eloquence and passion, rich in nuances of dynamic and phrasing, and is especially masterly in reconciling the often seemingly unrelated rhetorical gestures and the abrupt stops and starts into a convincing architectural whole.
